What Is Concealer For? Tips & Uses

hi uh okay i'm alex if you're new um maybe i should start doing that a little bit more so people know who i am okay so if you saw my last video basically this series is talking about the absolute basics of certain makeup techniques i guess my last one was foundation going to be talking about the absolute basics of concealer and the differences so if you're a little bit lost like it would probably be very helpful to watch these in order i'll have a playlist or something and i will link the previous video down below or up here oh let me see if i can remember which side it's on this one okay so the the biggest difference between a concealer and a foundation is that concealer typically has a little bit more coverage depending on you know which concealer it is where you're using it whatever but it's typically going to be i mean it's called concealer right so it's usually used to conceal okay so for instance i do have a layer of foundation on my skin once again if you are confused and you're like what i don't get it uh i'll have that video linked somewhere it's probably helpful to watch that first so that you can understand what the point of foundation is but concealer is used to cover up certain things so you can see that i applied my first layer of foundation and i have a nice cohesive color going throughout my skin but you know i have certain areas where i've got breakouts or like little patches i had a peel so i'm like healing in certain areas obviously underneath my eyes i have dark circles that i need to take care of that's another thing for concealer another way that people use concealer is using a slightly lighter shade to highlight certain areas of their face so rather than using something that's going to be exactly the same color as their skin tone which you would use to conceal these spots and if you're not trying to manipulate your face shape you would probably use that underneath your eyes as well but if you want to add a little bit of dimension to your face then using a slightly lighter concealer will do that now one of the reasons that people do that with a concealer use something a little bit lighter to pin like pinpoint what highlight certain areas of their face typically the high points including like you know here in the center of the forehead up top of the cheeks maybe a little bit on the chin is you're trying to bring those areas forward you're trying to make them look a little bit more plump and you're trying to bring a little bit more attention to those areas the reason for using a slightly lighter shade is and we will get into this a little bit more when i talk about bronzing and contouring is that the skin is not a flat color ever skin is transparent i was gonna say translucent whatever it's layers right so you've got a bunch of stuff going on underneath your skin you have different colors like if you just look at my neck i've got veins under there uh you kind of see this like top color but there's also like an under color which is like often referred to as your undertone your actual skin tone there's a lot of [ __ ] going on there right so if you apply one thick layer of a foundation on your face and just leave it at that it's gonna look weird because you're putting this one flat color on your face and the rest of your skin doesn't look like that like it's very unnatural right so that's kind of why you start off with a base like foundation and then people use concealer contour bronzer blush to kind of build on top of that that stuff is going to be in other videos just so you know like why people conceal and highlight so i'm going to be doing that but first i'm going to be using concealer to pinpoint conceal my breakouts so for this you want to use something that's going to be a little bit more full coverage than your foundation you can actually use your foundation for instance i mixed my foundation to get the perfect color on this little guy right here it's been sitting for a little while so when it sits a little bit it tends to thicken up and become a little bit more full coverage sounds kind of gross but uh that actually is helpful so you can use your foundation for that or you can pick up a concealer that is the same color as your foundation i tend to find a hot like i tend to have a hard time doing this because i have very specific skin tone i am fair skinned and i have an olive undertone so it's not the easiest to find something like a concealer and a foundation that work perfectly so i am actually going to use this foundation for this technique you want to have like a nice detailer brush so this is the bh cosmetics number 11 brush if you look at it it's got like a you know comes to a point it's a little bit tapered but it's not like it's a little more stiff but it's not like too stiff you know so what i'm going to do is in the areas where i clearly have breakouts i'm going to pick up some product on that brush and i'm going to place it in those areas another thing that you can do like i said this product sitting out tends to thicken up the formula a little bit and the thicker the formula the more full coverage it's going to be another thing that you can do is once you pop it down is let that sit that'll thicken it a little bit more now pinpoint concealing is something that takes a little bit more time but once you get the hang of it you know it goes pretty quick it doesn't have to be like so precise you can kind of like pop it down let it sit for a second while you do everything else and you can be a little bit more general when you have like you know general redness or kind of like a cluster of breakouts but if you focus more coverage in certain areas and keep the rest of your face a little bit more sheer or lightweight it kind of tricks the eye into thinking that you just have like flawless skin you know if you put a ton of full coverage on it ends up looking like very unnatural and kind of cakey or it can all right so now that uh those have sit a little bit i'm going to go in with my finger and just pat and i'm not going to move my finger around a lot i'm just going to very lightly pat over that area and kind of lightly blend because the more you move your finger the more you move the product around you really want to keep it the point of pinpoint concealing is being very precise with your application some dry areas down here because of the peel that i got recently so product is going to stick there a little bit more you can also use like a tiny fluffy brush if you feel like it's hard with your finger or like if you feel like you're removing product with your finger which you know can tend to happen but if you're going with a clean brush you run sort of the same risk so it's up to you so the exception of this little dry guy that looks pretty good all right so obviously we didn't use a concealer you can use a concealer but you could also reuse your foundation for that but that's basically the same thing now for highlighting y
